Workington Golf Club A have maintained their top spot in the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League Division One.
They made the short trip to their closest rivals, United Club A and came away with a 3-2 victory.
The two Workington sides met up in the top tier heavyweight contest with defending champions, Golf Club A starting the better with a confident win from captain, Mark Brasted.
Frame two proved that the United Club A meant business as Clive Lister delivered a blistering performance to win with breaks of 33 and 41 for 1-1.
As the next frame begun United A were strong favourites to make it 2-1 but as Simon Frazer produced his best showing of the season so far he ensured it was his team that took the lead.
The next frame saw both players in with a chance, however as Phil Sorfleet finished strongest it was the Golf A cueist who guaranteed his team went home with the match victory at 3-1.
The league’s point a frame format gave the last game the significance it deserved, and with Andrew Mitchelhill in total damage limitation focus the United A captain took the last to peg back the Golf A side to 3-2.
The Veterans Club A made a massive statement with respect to their Division Two title challenging hopes with a 5-0 home victory over second placed United Club B.
The match between the two Workington sides started favourably for Vets A as Craig Davies delivered his best performance of the campaign to put his team 1-0 up.
Vets A’s Mark Tunstall turned round an early deficit in frame two and with a confident finish the score moved to 2-0. A Kevin Basnett break of 37 was enough for 3-0 and with the Vets A outfit taking the next the match scoreline moved on to 4-0.
The last frame needed full concentration if maximum points were to be gained and in triumphing with aplomb Mark Tatton completed the whitewash to leave the Vets A eight points clear at the top of the table. They sit on a Division Two total of 29 points with United B still second on 21 points.
Flimby Social continue to look strong in Division One and with another victory, in as many weeks, over fellow top tier side Workington Conservative Club the 3-2 away win keeps them in touch on a third placed total of 32 points.
Wins for Julian Plaza and Alan Moore gave the Cons the sort of start that made the match victory a strong possibility but with winning performances from Sal Cakmak, Paul Vickers and Kevin Kirkham the Flimby outfit powered their way to a superb match victory to leave the Cons side stunned. Cons sink to the bottom of Division One on 26 points.
Workington’s Station Road Club moved up one place in the Division One table to fourth with a 3-2 away victory at Division Two’s Maryport Social.
Tom Thompson and John Teasdale ensured Station Road raced to a 2-0 lead but with Maryport’s Andrew Scott and Gary Miller winning frames three and four the final frame would be the one to split the two sides.
Needing to stay composed as the end of the frame approached, Darren Lawson did just that, and in depositing the balls he required the Station Road cueist delivered an important match victory. Station Road sit on a Division One total of 26 points and Maryport remain in a Division Two fourth place on 13 points.
Finally, Whitehaven’s Rack Shack continue to show improvement as they battled their way to a 3-2 home victory over fellow second Division Two side, Workington Veterans Club B.
A win for Adam Hodgson backed up with a victory for Lewis Staughton gave the away side huge confidence but as Andy Moore won the next he pulled the score back for the Rack Shack at 2-1.
The fourth frame ultimately ended up being decided on the ‘miss rule’ but as it went to Rack Shack’s Adam Morilla the comeback was complete.
In the last a high scoring encounter was finely balanced but as middle of the frame approached it was Phil Denver who upped his game to take the victory for the Rack Shack to record their third win of the season.
The Rack Shack are positioned third in Division Two on 15 points with the Vets B fifth in the same division on 13 points.
