A memory garden has been established at Carlisle United’s Brunton Park.

It has been created through the efforts of club volunteers, the Cumberland Youth Justice Service and local businesses.

United say that the project was managed by supporters liaison officer Simon Clarkson.

He said: “The Former Players Association kindly donated a bench in memory of Dave Wilkes. Discussions on where to put this led to the concept of a memory garden.

“The initial phase involved a lot of hard labour in preparing the area, often in very challenging weather conditions. This work was done by Cumberland Youth Services and Carlisle United Supporters Groups volunteers, with a notable mention for John Notman.

“MKM building supplies donated a lot of the materials and together with Capstick Nursery, they helped bring the project to life with professional advice.

“We are also indebted to James Falder who undertook all the building work in his own time. The finishing touch was provided by AW Jenkinson who donated the wood bark. I hope the area will serve as a quiet, reflective place where fans can go to be comforted and inspired.”

An area of the garden is still to be planted out and Simon explained the final phase which will allow fans to contribute.

He said: “I know how much pleasure it will bring to have a shrub in memory of a loved one in the garden, so working with Capstick Nursery, fans can contact them on 01228 710926 to discuss their options and provide something of their choosing.

“As the area becomes established we will take on board feedback about future developments. The area is fully accessible, so we hope that it is a place that staff and fans can all use.”

The official website spoke to fan Wendy Feddon who said: “I am delighted that I have been able to provide a shrub for the garden in memory of my late brother. I now have somewhere at Brunton Park to quietly reflect and think of him.”
