The A595 at Grizebeck was closed in both directions this morning.
There is heavy traffic due to an overturned car and car fire between the service station at Grizebeck and the Kirkby-in-Furness turn-off.
The incident was reported at 3.50am today, Thursday, February 1.
Westmorland and Furness Council said the fire had caused significant damage to the carriageway just south of Wreaks Causeway.
The diversion route was via Broughton A593 to Torver onto the A5084 to Lowick Green then back onto the A5092.
It appears that the road reopened around lunchtime, but that has not been confirmed.
