A West Cumbrian school has earned £130 through the efforts of a locally bred pigeon.
A mealy hen was entered into the RPRA’s annual One Loft race on behalf of Moor Row Primary School.
During the course of the season the bird picked up a first and third in two of the races that were flown during the summer.
The breeders, Andrew Kenmare and son Tom, have had previous success with their entries on behalf of local schools.
Over two seasons – a young bird and then as a yearling – their entry Frizy Flyer won £1,760 for Frizington School.
This time Andrew and Tom presented the young mealy hen to the Moor Row school which is bred from a five-year-old sister to Frizy Flyer.

The older hen (through birds from Nolan and co and Paul Fisher) was paired with a cock from Graham and co of Cleator Moor through the 2022 Cumbria Social Circle exchange.
Andrew said: “We visited Moor Row School in March and the kids loved learning about pigeon racing. They were introduced to the mealy hen and christened her Moor Rower.

“It was great for Tom and myself, along with Cumbria Region officials Les Blacklock and Jimmy Nelson, to return recently to see the staff and kids and present their certificates and cheque for £130.
“There were a number of kids really interested in pigeons and it’s just a pity there are no flyers left in Moor Row as with a bit of encouragement I’m sure they would get involved in the sport.”
