
The death has been announced of former Carlisle United star Stan Bowles, regarded as one of football’s great entertainers.
Bowles, who was 75, played at Carlisle in the 1971-72 season, scoring 13 goals in 36 games for the Blues who were a Second Division side at the time.
Early the following season, in September 1972, he was sold to Queens Park Rangers for £110, 000.
His career really took off at QPR where he went on to play 255 games and scored 70 goals, and has been a club icon ever since.
At the time of his death today Bowles he was the life chairman of the Queens Park Rangers supporters group LSA (Loyal Supporters Association).
Before arriving at Brunton Park he had played for Man City, Bury and Crewe and after QPR turned out for Notts Forest, Leyton Orient and Brentford.
In total he played 507 League games for his eight clubs and was also capped five times by England, scoring once against Wales in 1974.
Bowles had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2015 and QPR have said – “It was with a heavy heart they had learned that the club icon had passed away.
“All our thoughts are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. May he rest in peace.
“The club will be confirming how we will be paying a fitting tribute to Stan in due course.”
