Tributes have been paid to the paraglider killed after a crash in the Lake District.

Malc Grout, who was well-known in the Keswick area and much-loved in the paragliding community, died on Sunday after the incident on Blencathra.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service posted a picture of Mr Grout on its Facebook page.

It said: “On Sunday afternoon our critical care team attended a paragliding incident on Blencathra, which sadly involved a gentleman called Malc, a well-known individual known and loved by members of our critical care team.

“Sadly, Malc’s injuries following the incident were too severe, and he passed away despite our experienced team’s best efforts.

“We’d like to send our heartfelt consonances to his family, his friends, and the paragliding community he was deeply rooted in, who have supported our service in the past.”

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team said police received several calls from walkers who saw the paraglider crash near Foule Crag on Blencathra on Sunday.

The team was called about 2pm and the Great North Air Ambulance and Coastguard helicopter airlifted members to near the location.

The team said: “RAF Mountain Rescue Service were training in the area and also responded. A doctor and Keswick team member were lowered to the paraglider pilot but unfortunately nothing could be done to save the man.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences go to the man’s family and friends. He was a well known figure in the lakes paragliding community, and a friend to a number of Keswick Mountain Rescue Team members.”
