A specialist survey team is carrying out ground investigations on land near Millom that has been identified as the location for a new visitor attraction.
The work starts today, Monday March 11, and should take around two weeks.
Plans for The Iron Line propose the enhancement of RSPB Hodbarrow to create a new route incorporating the location’s sea wall and coastal lagoon.
A planning application for the scheme – part of Millom Town Deal – has been submitted.
Due to the historic use of the site, which is part of the former iron mining and associated works, it is now necessary to determine the location of old mine shafts as well as the condition of the ground for any potential contamination.
Background information has been collated and the next stage will see drilling rigs brought onto the site to take core samples.
David Savage, chair of Millom Town Deal Board, said: “People may see some activity taking place on site, so we feel it’s important to clarify what’s happening and why.
“This is simply a crucial and timely standard step when a scheme like this is being developed.
“The results will provide valuable information that will go on to inform the design process as it goes forward.”
If plans are approved, The Iron Line would see a new welcome centre built at the location with a cafe, retail area and events room providing new employment and volunteering opportunities.
A new multi-use and inclusive pathway will be installed along with new signage and seating, bird hides and viewing platforms. An existing bird hide would be provided with new cladding and a living roof, supporting the enhancement of wildlife habitats.
In addition, the location would be provided with new access for visitors, landscaping and a purpose built pay and display car park offering disabled parking spaces, EV charging facilities and bicycle storage.
Millom Town Deal secured £20.6 million from the Government’s Towns Fund in November 2022 with an additional £8.7 million in match funding to help the town and its communities to thrive in the future.
Working with Cumberland Council, the money will be used to deliver four projects. Alongside The Iron Line, the Millom Town Deal includes Activating Community Health, Reactivating Heritage Buildings and Connecting Millom and Haverigg.
Work continues on other parts of the Town Deal projects. The latest plans for a scheme to improve ways to move around Millom and Haverigg sustainably were shared with the community on Wednesday 6 March at a drop-in public engagement event at Millom Guide Hall
The engagement material is now available to view on the Millom Town Deal website. This also includes a link to the online survey. The deadline for responses is Wednesday March 20.
Once completed, the Connecting Millom and Haverigg project will make it easier and safer for people to move around Millom and Haverigg on foot, by bicycle and by incorporating the needs of those with limited mobility.
