The Carlisle Thursday Night billiard league season is drawing to a conclusion, with only a couple of weeks left.
In the White league standings, Peter Stanyer has one game left to play and has a three point lead over Paul Cowing, but Paul has two games left to play.
So if Paul wins his final two matches with scores over 325 he will clinch that particular league title.
In the Red league, its a different story as there are five players who could mathematically still win that particular competition.
Currently Neil Walby and Brian Sloan lead the standings on 15pts, but four other players could mathematically pip them to the title once the remaining fixtures are played.
In the games this week there were some very close calls on the bonus points target for each player.
Mark Taylor grabbed three points with a win and 320 points (27 break). His opponent Peter Dean remains without a win (but will come good, as he improves with each match he plays). It was great to see him score exactly 300 (break of 21) to grab a bonus point.
Nigel Lewthwaite stepped up a gear with a score of 328 to earn three points, in his match against Michael Waring, who was just 8 short of the 300 bonus target on 292.
John Metcalfe and Paul Heslop had a very close game, where John pulled back his 60 point handicap in the first half hour with breaks of 20 and 31, but after that Paul was able to keep his nose in front until the final few minutes.
Then john scored an 18 break which gave him the win 313-303, and also gave both players the extra bonus point for reaching 300 points.
Brian Sloan kindly stepped in as sub to play against David Midgley. With 20 minutes to go the scores were even, but then a dry spell for Dave (break of 22) and regular high teen breaks for Brian (aka The Sub) saw him win 329 to 234.
Paul Cowing was the night’s top scorer winning 355 (44, 41, 27 breaks) against Paul Scott 243.
In the last game of the night Mike Griffiths scored well with breaks of 38, 33, 28 and 25, but Neill Walby came up with a good break of his own (27) that proved crucial as Neil won 302 to Mike’s 296.
