Uppies and Downies 2024: Are you ready?

There’s only a week to go until the first game of Uppies and Downies is played in Workington.

The traditional mass no rules football series will start at the town’s Cloffocks at 6.30pm on Good Friday, with games also played on Easter Tuesday and the following Saturday.

For those not familiar with the game – a leather ball, made by Mark Rawlinson, is thrown off from the concrete bridge. The Uppies have to get it to Workington Hall and the Downies to the harbourside.

Games can last anything from an hour to all night.

Last year saw a whitewash as the Uppies clinched all three games – with  Leon Dymatrowski hailing on Good Friday and Brian Fearon – with a little help from Nathan Askew – on Tuesday. The third and final ball was hailed by Declan Newman.

Here at Cumbria Crack, we follow the action and bring you live updates as it happens for each of the games. We’ll be at all three games this year too.

So, with only seven days to go, we thought we’d share some of our photos – mainly taken by Mark Regan, Tom Kay and Lucy Edwards – from 2023.

Can you spot yourself in the scrum?
