Plans for new event space in Maryport

What the stage could look like

A planning application to revitalise Maryport’s historic harbourside has been submitted to Cumberland Council.

The proposals include a new public event space, which will be located on a piece of grassland next to the aquarium and the Shiver me Timbers play area.

If approved, it will include a purpose-built stage for live entertainment with amphitheatre-style banking where the audience can sit.

There will also be a bar created from repurposed shipping containers, and a marquee space which will be flexible for different events.

In addition to these plans, enhancements are being made to the wider harbourside location. The aged Shiver Me Timbers park is being replaced with a colourful new adventure play area and a splashpark.

A public consultation is underway to choose the design for this and the results will be announced soon.

Meanwhile, at the nearby Maryport Activity Centre, formerly known as the Wave, a major refurbishment will get underway in June which will include a new adventure soft play for smaller children, an enhanced Clip n’ Climb activity centre, and an improved gym.

These are all part of the regeneration scheme but either already have planning permission or do not require it.

Cumberland Council is managing the £12 million regeneration of Maryport and this planning application is the next step in Maryport’s transformation. The money for the harbourside improvements is being provided through the Government’s Future High Streets Fund.
