Stalemate for Windscale in last home fixture

Windscale entertained Seaton Carew in their last home fixture of the 2023/24 Wearside League season and the game ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

It was the hosts who made the most of the attacking plays with Lewis Selkirk, Matt Metcalf, Will Rooke and Lewis Jolly particularly lively, keeping Seaton custodian Adam Linsel alert.

Linsel went on to become Seaton’s man of the match and was called on a number of times to prevent a Windscale score.  But on the other hand Seaton’s pacy front pairing of Mathew Robson and Robbie Lithgo also kept the Atoms defensive line busy.

Despite the majority of play being conducted in the Seaton half of the pitch, it was the visitors who took the lead in the 27th minute.  Liam Travers, on a charge forward, picked out Robson who deposited the ball into the back of the Atoms net.

Seaton shored up their defence to retain their one goal advantage despite some good opportunities created by the Atoms, but Linsel was vital in ensuring the visitors held onto their 1-0 lead at the interval.

The second half was a mirror of the first 45 minutes with  Windscale having the majority of the possession and playing some good football with little to show for their endeavours.

Lee Jolly was called on to keep his side in the hunt, making a superb save from Travers when the Seaton man was sent clear one-on-one with the Atoms keeper.

Selkirk and Jolly were again thwarted by Linsel as the game entered its last 15 minutes.  The Atoms claimed a penalty for a handball by a Seaton defender in the process of clearing the ball from his goal line from a well delivered corner kick, but the match official ignored the protests and waved play on.

The Seaton dam was finally broken with five minutes left. A cross, which was over a packed Seaton penalty area, was picked-up by Harry Hodgson wide of the back post. He calmly clipped the ball over the advancing Linsel to notch a deserved equalising goal for the hosts.

The final few minutes had the teams going for the jugular, a couple of scoring chances created by both, again nothing good enough to beat either keeper so the game ending all square.

Windscale travel to Annfield Plain on Saturday to complete their Wearside League programme.
