L&L Property Contractors Snooker League’s Cup final is the Derwent Valley Asbestos Removal and Demolition sponsored Eric McMullen Memorial TKO Handicap Trophy.
This year it’s gone to Workington’s United Club A who chalked up a 3-0 victory over Flimby Social.
The final started with Flimby’s Sal Cakmak (+27 handicap) cancelling out his handicap deficit with some fine potting and with the game moving toward the last few reds Cakmak was 18 points to the good.
This didn’t deter his opponent, however, and with some equally confident cueing United A’s Tony Hindmoor (+50) got back into the frame.
Then, with the blue remaining, Cakmak was presented with the opportunity he was looking for. A miss on what was essentially frame ball gave Hindmoor a chance but in only managing to deposit the following two colours the game went to the black.
A few quality safety shots from both players followed, before Hindmoor secured the first opening and in wasting no time the United A cueist cooly potted the black to win the frame 69-55.
In frame two Flimby leading light Kevin Kirkham (+5) knocked off the handicap start quickly but in not quite managing to pull away Dave Chapman (+29) nudged back in front to lead by eight points with the colours remaining.
Back at the table, however, Kirkham was faced with a frame-winning chance on the yellow. Cueing the first of the six colours nicely in it went and as green, brown and blue followed by what looked like frame ball pink the Flimby talisman looked to be levelling the match.

However, a surprising miss ensued and with Chapman potting the resultant long pink followed by a similar black, the United A sharpshooter made it 2-0 with a 62-53 victory.
In what turned out to be the third and final frame of the match United A’s Peter O’Hagan (+5) made a brilliant start as a 31 break brought the scores almost level.
Powerless to what continued to be an O’Hagan onslaught, Flimby’s Geoff Banton (+39) tried hard to get some points on the board. This effort proved to all in vain however, and as the O’Hagan lead continued to grow Banton eventually offered his hand as the United A cueist won comprehensively with a 98-46 scoreline for frame, match and title.
Teams that just missed out on qualifying for the Eric McMullen Memorial TKO Handicap Trophy had also played off during the last few months culminating in a 3-0 plate victory for Workington’s Veterans Club A over Maryport Social.
The first frame saw Craig Davies (+32) overcome Maryport’s Ben Scott (+37) with a 65-35 win for a 1-0 Vets A lead. A break of 38 in frame two from Kevin Basnett (Scr) was enough for the Vets A captain to make it 2-0, with a 86-42 win over Andrew Sharp (+37), and as the Vets A side won the next with a 88-65 scoreline, a 3-0 victory was complete which saw the Division Two champions win the cup for the third year running.
