Workington Comets went top of the Championship with last night’s 47-43 win at Plymouth.
But team manager James Denham says the target is really to finish in the top four and make the end-of-season play-offs which decide the title.
He also has a double on his mind with the Comets also through to the semi-final of the BSN Series competition, and the draw is expected in early June.
“We couldn’t be happier with how we’ve started the season, especially when you consider we have three riders who have never seen these UK tracks before. How they are adapting has been a feature of our team performances,” said Denham.
The team manager also had a word for the Comets fans who had made the 480-mile trip from Workington to Plymouth, and will be moving on to Poole for tonight’s follow-up Championship meeting.
“The fans were great and I was so pleased for them that we provided a win. The riders were very appreciative of their support.
“We will see them at Poole tonight in what is going to be one of our toughest tests. Like ourselves they have a very good top five so I’m looking for us to make it a very close meeting,” he said.
Poole promoter Dan Ford is expecting a tough test when the Pirates host impressive newcomers Workington in the Cab Direct Championship tonight.
The Pirates opened their league account at Berwick earlier this month and now face a Comets side who were victorious at Plymouth last night.
Ford said: “Workington have qualified for the final stages of the BSN Series having won their group which contained Scunthorpe and Redcar and that in itself tells a story, so there is no question of this being an easy fixture for us.
“But we have seen the spirit in the Poole side come to the fore in our matches this season, not least in our three away meetings where we have found ourselves very much on the back foot in the early half of the meeting but gone on to force last heat deciders.
“I really think we could be in for a very entertaining contest.”
