A Carlisle play area has been closed due to flooding.

The city was the wettest place in the UK yesterday, after 65.6mm of rain fell in 24 hours, causing chaos on the roads and flooding.

Bitts Park play area had to be closed today, Thursday May 23, after rain flooded it.

Cumberland Council said it expected the play area will be closed until next week while an assessment and clean-up of the site took place.

It said while water levels are falling in the River Caldew, the River Eden remained high and the risk of further water entering the park was still present.

It added: “There is a lot of standing water in the play area and our teams will carry out a full assessment and clean up of the site once it is possible to do so.

“They hope to be able to do this on Tuesday May 28, subject to the site being accessible, and anticipate that much of the site will be suitable for reopening next week.

“The splash pad will however require a more detailed inspection and clean prior to attempting to re-open it and the sand pit is likely to require replacement of the sand before it can return to use.”
