A man has been jailed for carrying out a knife attack in Barrow in 2022.

Sean Callan, 34, of Chester Street, Barrow, was sentenced at Preston Crown Court after pleading guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

The court heard how on February 1 2022, Callan approached an address on York Street in Barrow, banging on the door and was heard shouting “I’m going to kill you”.

He was then seen fighting on the street with another man. During the altercation, Callan stabbed his victim with a knife.

After making off from the scene, patrol officers later spotted Callan and arrested him.

On a subsequent search of an address, a blood-stained T-shirt was recovered.

The victim suffered a laceration to their torso but made a quick recovery.

Callan refused to answer questions in his police interview but later admitted the offences at court.

He was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Detective Sergeant Stewart Glendinning, of Cumbria police, said: “The consequences of carrying a knife can end in tragedy.

“Whilst the victim in this case did not suffer any life threating injuries, it is extremely fortunate this attack did not result in loss of life or any more serious life-changing injuries, which could have seen Callan in court for murder charges.

“There is absolutely no excuse for carrying a knife in Cumbria and our message is clear – we take offences such as these extremely seriously and will prosecute those who carry knives on our streets.”
