Plenty of highlights at next Mitchells Antiques and Fine Art Auction

Among the ceramics is a single owner collection of over 50 lots of Moorcroft pottery with estimates ranging from £70 to £400. 

Highlights at Mitchells next Antiques and Fine Art Sale include valuable 17th century silver, 50 lots of Moorcroft pottery, 25 watercolours by Len Roope and a rare 1814 Indian chief’s medal.

Held from June 19 to June 21, the sale also includes over 350 lots of antique furnishings and over 200 lots of gold, silver and diamond jewellery with estimates ranging from £30 to £20,000. 

Silverware

Highlights among the silverware are a pair of William and Mary candlesticks by the Huguenot silversmith Daniel Garnier, circa 1695, measuring 13.5cm in height and weighing 602 grams which have an estimate of £2,000 to £3,000. 

There is also a good selection of other silverware for sale including salvers, coffee pots, teapots, tea services and condiments.

Ceramics

Among the ceramics is a single owner collection of over 50 lots of Moorcroft pottery with estimates ranging from £70 to £400. 

Other notable ceramics include a pair of 19th century Vienna porcelain figurines shepherdess and companion with a valuation of £100 to £150.

Collectors’ items

Collectors’ items feature a very rare silver North American Indian Chief’s Medal dated 1814 by T Wyon Junior, also known as the George III Indian Peace Medal, with a bust of George III on the reverse which is expected to make £2,000 to £3,000. 

A bronze sculpture by Duncan MacGregor, Flying Sails (42/150), with a height of 61cm is valued at £600 to £800. 

A bronze sculpture of an octopus by Chris Borela, Scarlett (54/250), measuring 38cm in length should make £250 to£350. 

A Chinese book, Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting 1679-1707, compiled by Wang, Zhen is expected to sell for £1,000 and £1,500 and a Rolleiflex 6008 professional medium format camera outfit is valued at £400 to £600.

Paintings

Valuable fine art includes an oil on board painting of children playing on the beach by Dorothea Sharp (1874-1955) with an estimate of £8,000 to £12,000. 

A pencil on paper landscape from a sketch book by Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947), Parasol au bord de la mer, is expected to sell for £1,000 to £1,500.

A pair of 19th century gouache ship portraits measuring 34cm x 53.5cm each and initialled are valued at £400 to £600 for the pair. 

Paintings by renowned local artists include a collection of 25 watercolours by Len Roope (1917-2005) with estimates ranging from £100 to £400 including Evening at Maryport and a view of Workington Harbour. 

A watercolour of Coniston Water by William Heaton Cooper (1903-1995) has an estimate of £700 to £1,000 (ARR).

Also featured are two watercolours by Charles Oakley and works by Delmar Harmood Banner (1896-1983), Edward Horace Thompson (1979-1949), Geoffrey H Pooley (1908-2006) and Vivienne Pooley (b 1944). 

Antique furniture

Highlights among more than 350 lots of antique furniture include a late 19th century mahogany Chippendale-style armchair with an estimate of £800 to £1,200 and a large Japanese carved and lacquered cabinet which should sell for £400 to £600.

A George III inlaid mahogany cellarette containing glass flasks is expected to make £400 to £600 and three George III tallboys have estimates from £200. 

A Shapland and Petter three-piece mahogany bedroom suite is estimated at £200 to £300.

Clocks

Among the clocks is an Edwardian mahogany longcase clock with three train fusee movement by The Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company Regent Street London with both Westminster and Whittington chimes which is expected to sell for £800 to £1,200. 

When does Mitchells Antiques and Fine Art Sale take place?

Mitchells Antiques and Fine Art Sale will run from Wednesday, June 19 to Friday, June 21.

Day one

Day one of the sale, on Wednesday June 19,  will include Asian art, glassware & ceramics, jewellery, pocket watches & coins, silver & allied wares.

Day two

Day two of the sale on Thursday June 20 will include paintings, drawings & prints, objects of art, collectors’ items & metalware.

Day three

Day three of the sale on Friday June 21 will include table boxes, wall clocks, barometers and mirrors, textiles, furniture, longcase clocks, dining tables and chairs.

Where can I see the lots included in Mitchells Antiques and Fine Art Sale?

Lots are on view in the Cockermouth saleroom from Sunday June 16. 11am to 3pm, Monday June 17 and Tuesday June 18, 10am to 5pm and throughout each sale day.

Mitchells now offers free pop-up valuation events at venues around the county.
