Carlisle United opened their pre-season programme with a comfortable 8-0 win at Penrith.
Paul Simpson was able to name two separate elevens, one for each half, to give players good minutes and without the usual chopping and changing.
It didn’t take long for United to get in front when Cameron Harper wasn’t picked-up by the home defence and he was able to steer home a low cross at the far post.
Penrith did test Harry Lewis soon after when Luke Hunter hit one from the edge of the area but the United keeper dealt with it comfortably.
When veteran defender Kyle May brought down Charlie Wyke on the edge of the area Dan Butterworth took the free-kick and curled it beyond Aaron Taylor into the top corner.
Hunter was again Penrith’s main threat soon after but when he thought he was in on goal for a shot Sam Lavelle made a great block.
United were able to take a 3-0 lead into the break when Butterworth notched his second with a clinical strike from the edge of the area.
Five minutes into the second-half Carlisle were awarded a penalty and Taylor Charters made no mistake from the spot.
It soon became 5-0 after more good work between two of Carlisle’s youngster Sam Hetherington and Freddie O’Donoghue led to the latter firing in a good cross which was tapped home by Luke Armstrong.
After 73 minutes Charters got his second with a well-placed header and in the closing stages, the bright sparks – Hetherington and O’Donoghue – notched a goal apiece.ReplyReply allForward
