A festival designed to provide a fun and free community activity for local people will be held in Kendal later this month.
Kendal Family Festival will take place at various locations around the town on Saturday, July 27, from 10am to 5pm.
“We are really excited to be putting on this event, which we hope will engage the local community and bring people into the town,” said Peter Brendling, manager of Kendal Business improvement District (BID), which is organising the festival.
“It will also give them the opportunity to realise the diverse range of activities they can take part in during the summer holidays.
“Increased footfall in the town on the day should benefit local businesses and we also believe the activities will appeal to tourists visiting the area.”
Among the free activities on offer will be a 30ft climbing wall in the grounds of Stramongate School, which youngsters and adults will be able to try and test their head for heights under the supervision of qualified experts.
People will be able to have a go on Segways within the school grounds, which will also host archery, soccer skills and soft play axe-throwing taster sessions. In addition, there will be an exciting Wipe Out game which requires participants to be good at jumping!
CancerCare will also have a stall at the school grounds.
In the centre of Kendal crazy golf will be on offer in Elephant Yard and in Finkle Street there will be giant games including Jenga and Connect 4.
There will also be other activities, which are still to be confirmed.
“There will be something for children of all ages,” said Mr Brendling. “We held the Kendal Family Festival for the first time last year and it was very successful with, I would estimate, about 600 people taking part in activities.
“The feedback from local businesses last year was that the town was very busy and trade increased.”
It will be the second festival staged in town by Kendal BID this year following the successful Folk and Blues Festival on June 22.
“The aim of these festivals is to boost local community engagement and increase business and footfall in the town,” said Mr Brendling.
Kendal BID, a not-for-profit organisation, was established in 2014 and is now in its third five-year period of operation.
Its wide range of activities include marketing Kendal as a destination for visitors, running projects and providing benefits to businesses and the public that use them.
Kendal BID funds the Discover Kendal app, which highlights shops, food and drink establishments, businesses, attractions and varied things to do in the town, and sponsors the business section of the Visit Kendal website.
It can also award shop front grants to help businesses decorate or generally improve their frontages.
