Whitehaven CEO Les Messenger has made an impassioned plea for help from the local community as the rugby league club is said to be in dire straits.
Messenger’s video, released this morning, is an honest appraisal of the financial state of the club at this late stage of the season.
He says the club owes the taxman around £8,000 but he has made an arrangement with them to repay that amount.
The players have not been paid for recent matches, including the winning pay over Swinton, and the club are well behind in contract payments which is in the region of £14,000.
He said: “I am not going to let the club fold. I will be the last man standing, I won’t be leaving the players in the lurch. I told them last night that I will still be here.
“Please get on board, please engage. I need the good people of Whitehaven to come to the aid of the club. We are in dire straits, we need help, we need some money.”
He says that he has spoken to the RFL hoping they can pay the money due at the end of the season, earlier to help them through the next weeks.
