Windscale’s run of victories continued with another good midweek result on the road against Brandon United in the Wearside League when they emerged comprehensive 6-1 winners.
Taking a tip from the Olympic sprinters, Windscale were quickest out of the blocks going 2-0 up in the first seven minutes.
Brandon failed to deal adequately with a Lewis Selkirk corner in the 3rd minute and Matt Metcalf pounced to rifle the ball home.
The Atoms lead was doubled in the 7th minute with Metcalf involved again.
Reece Fretwell floated in a cross which Metcalf headed on to Will Rooke. The striker’s first effort was parried by the Brandon keeper and Rooke, sharp as a tack, followed up to score.
It was the Atoms Man of the Match, Lewis Jolly who stretched the visitors lead in the 16th minute.
Brandon were caught napping when Jolly seized on a loose pass then calmly tucked the ball into the back of the net.
Brandon created a good scoring chance after 30-minute mark, but Windscale custodian Fin Stephenson saved well low down to his right, ensuring the 3-0 advantage was retained at the interval.
Aiden Kegg was replaced by Andrew Begbie and before the Atoms adjusted to the change, Brandon reduced the arrears two minutes after the restart.
The setback fired up the Atoms who restored their three-goal advantage 10 minutes later. Another well delivered corner by Selkirk picked out Rooke who completed his brace by tucking the ball home at the back post.
Following the goal Brandon created a good opportunity virtually from the restart breaking through the Atoms defence, but Sam Denwood made a brilliant last ditch challenge to avert the danger.
Windscale added to their total in the 62nd minute. Ryan Gray fed Begbie who carries the ball forward setting up Jolly with an effort on goal. Jolly’s strike came back off the post and Begbie deposited the rebound beyond the Brandon keeper.
It was Jolly who notched his second and the Atoms final goal with dix minutes of the contest remaining. Following a good passage of play in midfield, Jolly beat the offside trap, slotting the ball home.
It was a good performance from all of the 16-man squad keeping their winning run going and retaining their top spot in the league.
The Atoms have two home fixtures to follow with a chance for them to maintain their momentum.
Saturday sees South Moor visit the Falcon Complex with a 2.30pm kick-off. The following Wednesday they entertain Bishop Auckland Reserves, kick-off 7.45pm.
