Penrith Cricket Club have announced the death of former player Dick Spruce at the age of 77.

Dick played for all three of the club’s senior teams and also Minor Counties cricket for Cumberland.

He would have played a lot more cricket, but for his commitments to his business – Sportscraft – his sports shops and suppliers of all things cricket.

The Penrith club’s Facebook post said: “Anyone in the county and beyond with any interest in cricket will have known Dick – many will have played cricket with and against him. He always entered a team in the PCC Medals.

“He was a passionate coach and led dozens of coaching courses that led to an army of volunteers coaching throughout the county. He was also the Cumberland team manager for a number of years.

“Sportscraft stocked absolutely everything a cricketer or club could possibly need and customers travelled from far and wide to get the very best equipment and the very best personal advice from Dickie. Has anyone played a greater role in Cumbrian cricket?

“A lovely man with a kind heart and genuine interest in people. Our thoughts are with Sue, David, Jenny and all the family at this difficult time.”

Dick’s career with the county spanned 16 years from 1967 to 1983 but because of his business commitments he only played in 14 Championship matches.

A wicket-keeper he took 18 catches and made one stumping in those appearances when his top score with the bat was 52no.
