Windscale got back to winning ways last night at the Falcon Complex when they beat Darlington RA 2-0.
But it was a game that very nearly didn’t take place as the kick-off was delayed until 8.30pm.
The Darlington club showed commitment towards fulfilling the fixture despite travel issues on the journey to Egremont.
They were delayed at Penrith for almost two hours after a lorry fire on the M6 earlier in the day.
When it would have been easy to turn round and have the fixture postponed they were adamant that they would continue.
The match officials and the Windscale team were prepared to wait for Darlington to arrive.
Darlington were first to threaten in the third minute with an effort by their prolific striker Ross Howell which was well gathered by the Atoms keeper Fin Stephenson.
Following several opportunities created by both sides it was Windscale who took the lead. With 10 minutes played, Lewis Selkirk delivered a corner kick into the Darlington penalty area, the wind carrying the ball beyond everyone fortuitously for the hosts entering the goal in the top left hand corner.
The lead was doubled in the 23rd minute with Selkirk notching his and the Atoms second goal. Straight off a plane from his Salou holiday he slipped a defender to slot the ball beyond Darlington keeper Sam Pinnegar.
The visitors almost reduced the arrears a minute from the half time whistle, but the Atoms Man of the Match, Ryan Fitzwilliam blocked a shot on the line which prevented a certain goal.
Play continued to be end to end following the restart. Darlington with the elements in their favour came more into the game, with the Atoms defence equal to anything constructed by the visitors.
Lewis Jolly and Elliot Lowrir were always lively while Will Rooke brought a great save from Pinnegar.
The Atoms have no fixture this weekend with Farringdon Detached visitors to the Falcon Complex next Wednesday with a 7.45pm kick-off.
