Former Carlisle United midfielder Jamie Devitt has been appointed as Professional Development Phase Assistant Coach with the Blues.

Devitt, 34, made over 150 appearances for United during his two spells at Brunton Park, scoring 23 times.

A real fan favourite and a popular player in the dressing room, he played an important part in United staying in League Two when Paul Simpson first returned to the club, and was a vital influence in the dressing room during the following campaign which led to promotion at Wembley.

He will now work with the youth team and assist Mark Birch as they continue to develop players.

Academy manager Steven Rudd said: “We are delighted to welcome Jamie back to the club.

“He will be working full-time with the under 18 players and assisting Mark Birch with the coaching and development of our young players – tasked with the aim of getting players into our first team.

“Having years of experience in the football league as a player and having won promotion with Carlisle United, we are excited about him passing on his knowledge and experiences to our academy players.

“Jamie has recently completed his UEFA B Coaching Badge and Talent Identification Level 2 award, developing his knowledge as he transitions into the next stage of his career.

“As part of Jamie’s role, he will also assist with the coaching of academy players within the YDP age groups (12-16s) where his enthusiasm, knowledge and experience will be invaluable as we look to produce the next Jack Ellis, Taylor Charters, Gabe Breeze, Jarrad Branthwaite, Joe White, Dean Henderson, Liam McCarron, Ryan Carr and many others.”

Simpson said: “I’m delighted that Jamie has been appointed in this role. He’s the type of character we want to have at the football club.

“He’s got great football knowledge and a great personality. This is a great opportunity for him to start on his coaching journey working alongside the other academy coaches.”

Devitt said: “I’m delighted to be back. I’ve been doing a few bits over the last six weeks or so and Birchy has been a massive help.

“I’ve loved every minute of it. The lads have all welcomed me and I’m buzzing to be here full-time, and I just want to help the lads in any way I can.”
