Shops in Workington, Silloth and Maryport have been praised after workers refused to sell cigarettes and vapes to underage customers.
Cumberland Council’s Trading Standards targeted 17 stores in the towns to make sure they were complying with legislation and under-18s were unable to buy cigarettes and vapes containing nicotine.
Workers at each of the shops challenged the underage volunteers for identification before refusing the sale.
It is a criminal offence to sell cigarettes and vapes containing nicotine to under-18s or buy them on their behalf.
Traders found to be breaking these rules risk being prosecuted and fined up to £2,500.
