Cumbrian workers will be among the first to benefit from health checks in a bid to tackle preventable diseases.
The county’s two councils have been awarded £317,000 to provide free cardiovascular checks to employees in their workplace as part of a Government pilot scheme.
It is specifically aimed at men aged between 40 and 70.
The councils will work with Cumbria Health to roll out the scheme to as many workplaces as possible. it hopes to provide thousands of checks by the end of March.
Susan Blakemore, chief executive officer of Cumbria Health, said: “Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death of men worldwide and early detection to identify early markers for preventable diseases will empower men to take action to improve their health independently.”
The health check will include a measurement of height, weight and waist, blood pressure test and a simple finger prick blood test to measure cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
