An 18th century Cumbrian village pub is on the market for £375,000.

The Shepherds Inn, in Melmerby, around nine miles outside of Penrith, is being sold by property adviser Christie & Co.

Nestled at the foot of Hartside Pass – voted one of Britain’s most scenic drives – the pub and restaurant is located on the edge of the Eden Valley and is set amongst the countryside.

Built in 1789, the family owned pub has been well renowned for its excellent food and drink offering, having been mentioned in the Good Beer Guide from CAMRA, as well as a rating of five stars from TripAdvisor.

With over 200 hundred years of history, it has long been known for providing hospitality to travellers, tourists and locals alike.

The pub has been owned and operated by husband-and-wife team, Margaret Haddow and Head Chef, Mike Haddow, since 2018, who are now selling to retire.

They said: “After many years in the hospitality industry, we have decided to entrust Christie & Co with the sale of our pub.

“We are confident that they will find the right buyers who will appreciate our pub as much as we do. We hope that the new owners, along with the village and our staff, will continue to enjoy it for many years to come.”

Christie & Co said the pub offers a great opportunity for an experienced hospitality operator looking to acquire a characterful freehold premises – or the property may appeal to an investor looking to let the premises to an operator.

Marslie McGregor, business agent at Christie & Co who is handling the sale, said: “We are delighted to offer the freehold sale of this historic village inn. The Shepherds Inn has established a strong reputation with both its loyal customer base and tourists to the area.

“This is an ideal acquisition for a lifestyle buyer who is possibly new to the hospitality trade or a multi-operator looking to expand their portfolio.”
