Workington Town embark on long journey

Anthony Murray, Workington Town head coach (Ben Challis)

Tomorrow Workington Town start the long journey that they hope will end with a showdown for a place in the Championship next season.

But there’s no second chance on Sunday, lose and they go out at Midlands Hurricanes, as the pair square up in the elimination play-off (ko 2pm).

The winners, however, progress to play the loser of the qualifying play-off between Rochdale Hornets and Hunslet.

All coach Anthony Murray and his players can do, though, is concentrate on one game at a time and that is a buoyant Midlands side who have never reached this stage of the competition before.

Town have named their 21-strong squad for the game and missing will be Billy Southward who has done well since breaking into the side but he has suffered a recurrence of an old knee injury.

Second row forward Jake Bradley is also an absentee due to concussion protocols following the last game two weeks ago at Oldham.

The squad is: Brad Brennan, Carl Forber, Chris Taylor, Ciaran Walker, Connor Saunders, Ellis Archer, Ethan Bickerdike, Grant Reid, Henry Hadfield, Jack Stephenson, JJ Key, Joe Hartley, Jonny Hutton, Jordan Burns, Jordan Thomson, Lian McPherson, Luke Charlton, Matty Henson, Tommy Brierley, Tyler Walton, Zarren Galea.
