Carlisle United are set to appoint MK Dons manager Mike Williamson as their new head coach.
However an attempt to make it a double deal with the Dons, by landing Liam Sweeting as their new sporting director, is said to have been foiled.
Reports today suggest the former Crystal Palace man will sign a new deal with MK Dons.
Sweeting, 35, was initially the head of recruitment and analysis and was promoted to his current role in 2021.
However, to land Williamson it is being reported that Carlisle have had to finalise a compensation deal said to be in the region of £200,000.
Stoke-born Williamson, 40, was a centre-back who played most of his professional football with Newcastle United (150) and Wycombe Wanderers (107) before cutting his managerial teeth with Gateshead.
It was a successful spell there, leading them into the National League.
His successor at Gateshead has been Rob Elliot, another who had been linked with the Carlisle job.
Williamson was appointed by the Dons at the start of last season and lifted the side from 16th to a play-off place, losing to eventual winners Crawley Town.
It’s been a difficult start this time round and his side are 20th in League Two, ironically just three points and two places above Carlisle.
United travel to Swindon on Saturday and Williamson is expected to be in charge although the sporting director might not be in place.
