Train passengers are warned to expect delays for the rest of the day.
A broken rail between Penrith and Carlisle at Southwaite resulted in the line towards Carlisle becoming blocked.
Many trains have been cancelled today. The broken rail was repaired at around 4pm, but passengers are warned that delays will continue on the network to and from Scotland.
TransPennine Express said train services will be cancelled or delayed by up to 45 minutes and disruption is expected until the end of the day.
Customers can use their tickets to travel on other operators and TransPennine said road replacement transport had been requested to run between Oxenholme and Glasgow, and Edinburgh and Carlisle.
