An online fund has been launched in memory of speedway fan Jay Cartmell.

Jay died following an incident on Saturday involving a firearm. A man, 60, has been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. He has been bailed.

He died after sustaining serious head injuries in an incident on land not far from the A66, north of Warcop.

A pupil at Jericho School, the youngster was a keen and talented football player, who was part of the Whitehaven Miners junior side. He was also a speedway fan and was a regular at Workington Comets, also having recently taken up speedway as a sport.

Workington Comets supporters club has set up an online fundraiser to help support his family.

It said: “Over the past few days the news has broken that one of our own Jay Cartmell has tragically lost his life.

“Jay was a regular at Workington speedway with his family each week having recently taken up speedway much to his family’s joy, seeing him make strides each time he took to the track.

“We want to try and help the family through this awful time by raising funds to help at this time.

Any donations that are made will go directly to the family. Rest in peace Jay, you will be sadly missed!”

Workington Comets said: “Workington speedway are saddened to hear of the passing of young Comets fan Jay, aged eight. We send our deepest condolences to his family at this time.”

Whitehaven Miners FC and other football clubs across the county have also released tributes to Jay.

Police said they were continuing their enquiries into the incident and encouraged anyone who may have seen the incident or the moments leading up to it to come forward.

Anyone with information which may assist can report to police online at www.cumbria.police.uk/reportit quoting incident number 135 of 28 September 2024 or call 101.

Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
