Three County Cup games dominate the weekend rugby union programme as all league action is put on hold.
It’s also an historic day for Cumbria rugby union as all three ties will have teams of four or five officiating and they will be wired for sound.
It’s the first time ever Cumbria have appointed for three Cumbria cup quarter finals on the same day.
Full communications sets, including a new four-way set, have just been purchased this season costing £1,700 through the support of shirt sponsors Firpress Printers
It demonstrates Cumbria Referees Society’s intention of providing both kit and equipment to all its members and to give as much support to Cumbrian RU teams.
One quarter final tie has already been played in which Upper Eden beat Carlisle to reach their third successive semi-final. They were beaten finalists two years ago.
Penrith have dominated the competition over the last few years and they start the defence of their trophy on Saturday at Keswick.
Penrith have just had two gruelling away trips and will welcome a short journey to play the Lakes side who go into the tie on the back of a heavy 41-7 defeat at Morpeth in Regional 2 North. Martin Maughan will have the whistle with three in support.
Kendal are reported to be playing their second team in the competition and have Aspatria as visitors to Mint Bridge.
Aspatria have won the County Cup competition more times than any other club and will be keen to impress again, although a lot could depend on how strong this Kendal 2nd team is going to be. Martin Denvir will have the whistle with a four-man support team.
The third tie features Kirkby Lonsdale at home to Cockermouth, two sides who didn’t enjoy a very good 2023/24 season but both are looking for better things this time round. Young Archie Harding will be officiating in the middle, with a five-strong back-up team on the sidelines.
