The formbook was turned upside down as bottom of the table Morecambe won at Barrow who had started the day third in the League Two table.
But Morecambe have been showing signs of putting a run together after a recent 2-2 draw at Fleetwood and they deserved this first win of the season.
It was achieved by an 82nd minute goal and a first clean sheet in 25 games, going back into last season.
The winner was scored by Ben Tollitt who volleyed home a left-wing cross from Adam Lewis which was his fifth goal of the campaign.
Importantly it allowed Morecambe to climb above Carlisle in the battle to break free of the drop zone.
Barrow had previously been unbeaten at Holker Street this season but the nearest they came to scoring came late on when substitute Andy Dallas hit a post.
A blustery wind spoiled the contest, which was disappointing for Barrow’s highest crowd so far (4,007) but in difficult conditions the Morecambe defence earned top marks for the work they did to defuse Barrow’s threat.
When the Bluebirds did get a chance to test the Morecambe keeper the former Barrow custodian Stuart Moore was equal to what Kian Spence and Dom Telford put at him.
Morecambe went close to opening the scoring before Tollitt’s goal but Marcus Dackers’ effort was dealt with by home keeper Wyll Stanway.
