West Cumbria teams languish at bottom of league’s premier division

West Cumbria’s two representatives fill the bottom two places in the West Lancashire League Premier Division.

Wyre Villa have dropped out of the league, leaving 15 clubs. Whitehaven and Cleator Moor Celtic sit 14th and 15th in the table respectively.

Coppull United were bottom until they picked up a first away win of the season as they recorded a 2-1 victory at Whitehaven.

After a goalless first half Jimmy McIver put the visitors ahead on 53 minutes and Jonty Mattock doubled the lead 11 minutes later.

Brad Harrison pulled one back for the hosts with a really good goal on 73 minutes but Whitehaven couldn’t find an equaliser.

Manager Carl Short said: “We weren’t great, missing a few core players but can’t take anything away from how well Coppull battled for everything, from a throw-in to a tackle.

“We did score a good set-piece goal from Brad Harrison but we simply weren’t good enough with the ball.”

Cleator Moor Celtic and Haslingden St Marys settled for a point apiece in an entertaining 3-3 draw.

Haslingden had taken a two goal lead before the half hour mark with both goals being scored by Charlie Ridge in the 19th and 28th minutes.

That lead was quickly wiped out as Celtic turned the game on its head with three goals in a nine-minute spell before half-time.

Rhys Little (36), Zac Benson-Lester (41) and Callum Jackman (45) fired Celtic into a half-time lead after Haslingden St Marys had looked good value for their lead.

Four minutes into the second half, though, the visitors were awarded a penalty and it was tucked away for St Mary’s to regain parity and it stayed that way to the end.

It’s Whitehaven’s turn to tackle Haslingden St Mary’s on Saturday, but away from home while Celtic travel to last season’s runners-up CMB, who are currently third in the table.
