The winter series of shows for the pigeon racing fraternity have started with Flimby HS and Workington Victoria clubs underway.
Flimby set the ball rolling with a class for old cocks in the village Sports and Social Club when Billy Southward cast his experienced eye over 60 entries.
It proved a good show for the Workington loft of Williams and Hadfield who were first and second, picking up the nom and judges special to go with the £25 first prize.
The full result was: 1, 2, Williams and Hadfield; 3, Berwick and co; 4, 7, McLuckie bros; 5, 8, R. McAvoy; 6, A. Bromley and co.
The opening show was sponsored by Team Varty and next week’s show on Wednesday is for old hens, judging at 7.30pm.

Workington Victoria followed up with their show for old cocks, which had 50 entries and another stalwart of the sport in the area, John Pooley was the judge.
After his deliberations he awarded tickets to the following: 1, 5, A, Hayton; 2, 4, Bromley and co; 3, Dolan and daughter; 6, McLuckie bros; 7, Williams and Hadfield; 8, Varty, son and grandson.
Next Friday’s show is for old hens, judging in the Union Jack at 7.30pm.
