This weekend was the 72nd running of the Brampton to Carlisle 10-mile Road Race, officially the oldest 10-mile road race still being competed in Britain, writes Paul Grindley.
The day, Sunday November 17, dawned cool and frosty, but that didn’t put off the hundreds of athletes who were on the start line for the 10am start, in a slight change to the usual procedure.
Instead of the race being started by the firing of the starting pistol, one of the event sponsors Stalkers Transport Services Ltd of Brampton, had the latest addition to their fleet on show, a Scania Tractor Unit in a special black and white livery in support of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, and the race was started by a blast of the horn on the lorry.
The race starts on Longtown Road in Brampton, just outside of William Howard School and finished on Eden Bridges in Carlisle city centre.
