Trains cancelled this week in South Cumbria due to flooding

Train services between Lancaster and Barrow will not run until at least Friday due to flooding.

Northern said all its services had been cancelled and stations between Lancaster and Barrow will not be service.

It said Network Rail staff were on site and are working to clear the flood water and make the necessary repairs to the track to allow train running to restart.

Network Rail said its teams were working round the clock to clear all the debris after the significant flooding.

The line is expected to reopen on Friday, November 29 at 4.30am.

Affected services are:

  • Manchester Airport – Barrow-in-Furness services will terminate/start at Lancaster.
  • Lancaster – Carlisle services via Barrow-in-Furness will start at Barrow-in-Furness.
  • Barrow – Carlisle services via Workington are running normally, however some services may be subject to delay or short notice alteration due to train crew displacement caused by this incident.

Northern tickets may be used at no additional cost on board TransPennine Express & Avanti West Coast services between Lancaster – Preston (in both directions) until Friday November 29 to allow people to connect onto alternative Northern services.

Road transport

From today, Monday November 25, road transport will operate between Lancaster and Barrow-in-Furness in both directions.

Full size coaches will not call at Silverdale or Arnside. People for these stations are requested to board the 16 seater minibuses which will call at all stations.

All replacement road transport will be operated by Travellers Choice coaches, South Lakes coaches, Travellers Choice Minibuses & S Line Minibuses.

  • Coaches departing from Barrow-in-Furness: 04:58 / 06:12 / 07:12 / 07:48 / 08:48 / 10:49 / 12:50 / 14:47 / 16:51 / 18:02 / 19:45 / 21:45
  • Coaches departing from Lancaster: 05:38 / 06:53 / 07:33 / 08:22 / 10:14 / 12:02 / 14:04 / 16:01 / 16:52 / 17:52 / 19:51 / 21:51 / 23:30
  • 16 Seater Minibuses departing from Barrow-in-Furness: 06:12 / 07:48 / 10:49 / 12:50 / 14:47 / 18:02 / 19:45 / 21:45 – Northern is currently in the process of sourcing additional operators who can assist on the route to increase the service levels.
  • 16 Seater Minibuses departing from Lancaster: 05:38 / 06:53 / 10:14 / 14:04 / 16:01 / 16:52 / 19:51 / 21:51 – Northern is currently in the process of sourcing additional operators who can assist on the route to increase the service levels.

Additional road transport to support with peak time travel will depart as follows:

  • 07:18 – Calling Grange over Sands, Carnforth & Lancaster only.
  • 07:44 – Calling Grange over Sands, Carnforth & Lancaster only.
  • 08:00 – Calling Grange over Sands, Kents Bank, Cark, Ulverston, Dalton, Roose & Barrow-in-Furness.
  • 08:22 – Calling Grange over Sands, Carnforth & Lancaster only.
  • 15:43 – Calling Ulverston, Dalton, Roose & Barrow-in-Furness.
  • 15:45 – Calling Ulverston, Dalton, Roose & Barrow-in-Furness.
  • 16:08 – Calling Ulverston, Cark, Kents Bank, Grange over Sands, Carnforth & Lancaster.

Check station information posters for the location of the bus pick up points and be advised that bicycles, ebikes and dogs (exc service dogs) are not permitted on replacement road transport.

Journey times will be extended by up to 60 minutes when using road replacement transport.
