West Cumbria A road to close for improvements

A West Cumbrian A road – used by hundreds of commuters – will be closed for five days next week for improvements.

The A5086 – which runs from Cockermouth to Egremont – is being upgraded as part of £14.3 million Government-funded programme, which has already completed work on other sections of the A595 and A5086.

The work near Scallow Farm will be carried out by Cumberland Council contractor DSD Construction Limited.

The road will be closed from Monday, December 9, from 7am to 6pm. The work is expected to last five days, weather permitting.

Although work is carried out during these hours, the road will remain closed for the full duration.

The project will include essential road network repairs, drainage replacement, and refreshed road markings.

Vehicle access for residents and businesses will be maintained whenever possible, and specific access needs can be discussed with on-site staff. Full access will be available for emergency service vehicles, pedestrians, and dismounted cyclists throughout the works.

Waste and recycling collections will proceed as normal, while updates about temporary bus stop relocations will be posted at affected stops. Passengers with bus route questions are encouraged to contact Stagecoach directly.

Cumberland Council said it recognised the A5086 was a key route and was working closely with local stakeholders, including parish councils and local members, to minimise disruption as much as possible.

The council asked for the community’s patience and co-operation and said it had a zero-tolerance policy regarding threatening or abusive behaviour.
