Cumberland and Westmorland & Furness councils have issued updates about waste and recycling collections in the aftermath of Storm Eowyn.

Cumberland Council suspended its collections today, Friday January 24, while Westmorland & Furness Council were not able to complete its rounds.

Westmorland & Furness Council’s household waste recycling centres were also closed today due to safety concerns.

They have issued an update on what will happen next.

Cumberland Council

Allerdale area

  • Trade Waste: Collections will take place tomorrow, Saturday January 25.
  • Domestic Recycling: Collections take place tomorrow, Saturday January 25.

Copeland area

  • Trade Waste: Collections will take place tomorrow, Saturday January 25.
  • Domestic Refuse: Will also be collected tomorrow, Saturday January 25.
  • Recycling: There will be no recycling collections until people’s next scheduled dates.

Carlisle area

  • Refuse Collections: These will be caught up next week.
  • Recycling Collections: Held until the next scheduled collection date.

Cumberland Council said: “If your recycling containers are too full, you can take excess materials to the household waste recycling centres or a local bring site

“For litter on streets, our street cleaning crews will be out next week. If you are willing and able, we would greatly appreciate your help in tidying up.”

Westmorland & Furness Council

It said: “While all crews went out today, it has not been possible to complete all rounds due to the weather conditions, especially in some of the rural areas, and we had to close one of our depots at Ecclerigg and cancel rounds when the depot became blocked by a fallen tree.”

Kendal area

  • All rounds collected except recycling in Lyth Valley where collections impacted by fallen tree blocking the road. Intention to return to pick up missed collections on Monday (weather permitting)

Ulverston area

  • All rounds collected except recycling in the following rural areas due to weather conditions: Kirkby in Furness/Broughton, Greenodd/Far Sawrey, Bouth/Finsthwaite/Backbarrow

Eden area

  • All rounds collected except waste in Mungrisedale/Martindale and recycling in Long Marton and surrounding villages. Intention to return for missed waste rounds tomorrow, Saturday January 25 (weather permitting)

Barrow area

  • All rounds suspended at noon as waste plant closed due to weather conditions.

The authority said: “We will be looking to catch-up on missed collections over the coming days and ask that anyone who hasn’t had their waste or recycling emptied today please bear with us at this time.

“Residents affected by missed collections today are advised to take containers in and we will update the collection schedule and information on the website.

“We recognise that there is significant amounts of debris and litter on the streets following the storm and will be arranging additional street sweeping rounds over the coming days.”
