Workington Rugby Union Club is celebrating after a major upgrade to its paddock pitch.

The club is marking its 100th anniversary at the Ellis Sports Ground and its paddock pitch is now illuminated by floodlights.

The club said: “This significant improvement will enhance training opportunities for a variety of local sports teams and marks a significant milestone in the club’s centenary year.”

Previously unlit, the pitch has been transformed thanks to £43,500 funded by the Government. The installation was carried out by RFU-accredited contractor Direct Sports Lighting.

Facilities chairman Kevin O’Neil said: “As we celebrate 100 years at Ellis Sports Ground, this new floodlit pitch is a fantastic testament to the club’s enduring commitment to the community and the future of sport in Workington.

“The new floodlights will allow us to train safely and effectively throughout the year, regardless of the weather or time of day.

“This will significantly benefit all our teams, from the youngest age groups to our senior sides, and is a wonderful way to mark our centenary.”

The project also included the installation of new street lighting to connect the pitch to the changing rooms, improving accessibility and safety for all users.

This additional work was made possible by a £13,000 grant from the Robin Rigg Community Fund, with installation carried out by Stobbarts Ltd.

Mr O’Neill added: “We are incredibly grateful the Government, as well as the Robin Rigg Community Fund for their generous support, especially during our 100th anniversary celebrations.

“This investment will have a lasting impact on our club and the wider community for generations to come.”

The upgraded facilities now provide three high-quality training pitches, supporting a diverse range of sports teams, including:

  • Workington RFC adult men’s, ladies’ teams and expanded youth section
  • Workington Town RL Ladies
  • ·Zebras FC

Paul Mackey said: “The Robin Rigg Community Fund is pleased to have contributed to the improved accessibility at Workington RFC.

“The new street lighting will ensure the safety and convenience of all those using the facilities, and we’re proud to be part of their 100th anniversary celebrations.”
