Over-running work on the Mallard has been blamed for a delay in the Windermere Ferry returning to service.
The project to install a new engine, refurbished gearbox and carry out other repair work, was due to be completed at the weekend, with the vessel due back in time for the half term break.
This afternoon ferry users were contacted and told the work had seen challenges and that a return-to-service date could not be confirmed.
The note went on to thank customers for patience and understanding.
Questions about the long term viability of the 30-year-old ferry have previously been raised by residents and businesses.
