A Lake District walker – planning to wild camp on Helvellyn – was rescued after becoming wet and exhausted.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out on Friday at around 1.20pm by their colleagues at Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team.

The walker had become cold, wet and exhausted while walking in bad weather. They were in Patterdale’s area so it was passed over to the team to deal with.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team said: “Seven team members made their way on foot from Hartsop into the Dovedale area and onto the summit between Dove Crag and Hart Crag in driving rain and very strong winds, over 80mph winds reported on Helvellyn summit at the time.

“It was established the casualty had set off on foot from Windermere Train Station around 5am and was intending on going to Helvellyn to camp for the night, on route they became cold and wet due to the rain and with the high winds they were unable to pitch their tent.

“Team members met up with the casualty warmed them up and gave them dry clothing and a blizzard blanket/jacket to wear and once warm they were walked off the hill back to the team Land Rovers and conveyed to Patterdale base for warm drinks.”

The rescue took just under five hours to complete.
