Tom Scaife

An inquest has been formally opened into the death of a pedestrian and doting dad-of-two who was struck by a vehicle in an Eden Valley village.

Tom Scaife, 32, of Culgaith, was pronounced dead at the scene of a collision which occurred on the B6412, in Temple Sowerby, at around 12.25am on Sunday February 23.

Cumbria police said the collision involved a white pick-up vehicle.

Following Mr Scaife’s death, his family said: “Tom was a doting father, who would have done anything for his two beautiful children who he loved very much.”

He was adored by so many people in his life, a real character and would be forever missed, they added.

At Cockermouth Coroners’ Court this morning, an inquest was formally opened into Mr Scaife’s death.

Margaret Taylor, assistant coroner for Cumbria, said Mr Scaife had been a maintenance worker.

A coronial investigation had begun on March 5, with identification evidence provided by a family member.

Ms Taylor said: “I understand that Thomas James Scaife was a 32-year-old pedestrian who was struck by a motor vehicle on a rural road in Cumbria. Sadly he was declared dead at the scene a short time later.

“I have been offered a cause of death due to multiple injuries. Clearly this is an unnatural death and it will be necessary for there to be an inquest.”

The hearing was adjourned to a provisional date of August 5 2025.

  • A man and woman arrested by police in connection with the incident had been released under investigation, pending further enquiries, police confirmed after the incident.
