A new disability rugby team has been launched in West Cumbria.
Workington Storm RLFC has been set up by 17-year-old Jayden Blair.
Its first training session will be held at The Den, on Mossbay Road, next Thursday, March 27, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
Jayden said: “All are welcome to come down we take on players of all abilities, ages and backgrounds so come give it a try.
“I decided to start the club because of the lack of opportunities for people with disabilities to play sports in West Cumbria.
“There isn’t a disability rugby team in West Cumbria or anywhere else in the county other than Barrow, so I knew I had to do something about it.
“It’s a club with laidback training sessions with the sole focus being on having fun.”
Jayden said the club was planning to enter teams into the LDRL (learning disability) league and PDRL (physical disability) league.
He added: “There is also a strong mental health side to all this as statistics show people with disabilities are more likely to struggle with mental illness and confidence.
“I want to help people grow their confidence together as a team and make new mates at the same time.
“Rugby league is often referred to as the people’s game and credited as the community game so I knew this step was essential in making rugby league available to everyone.”
