Penrith Rugby Club’s under-14s carried out a 22-mile litter pick in the Lake District – and found over 150 bags of discarded dog waste bags.
The team took a break from their usual schedule of training and matches to complete the route around Ullswater in two groups.
Starting out at Glenridding, the team, who were joined by their coaches and some parents, split into two groups to cover either side of the route which circumnavigates the lake.
The two groups met up at Pooley Bridge having combed both sides of Ullswater for litter and discarded rubbish.
Among the expected plastic waste, the boys were surprised by the number of abandoned bags of dog waste along the popular walking route.
They hope their efforts will serve to remind dog owners to be responsible, and bin their waste in the future.
The boys raised over £2,000 in support of the two charities they chose to help.
The Teenage Cancer Trust and CRY for Eden will both receive donations, with the team’s tour fund also benefiting.
The team was also grateful for the support of Chestnut House in Pooley Bridge, and Heather and Paul Coulston for their help with food and parking for the event.
The team return to rugby action next week as they aim to finish their season with further on field success.
