Uppies and Downies hall of fame: Hailers from the 1800s to the present day

Uppies & Downies is a game that is deeply rooted in Cumbrian history.

First played over 370 years ago, there have been hundreds of players who have hailed the ball over the years, each with their own story of victory.

Workington’s mass no-rules football game is played three times over Easter – Good Friday, Easter Tuesday and the following Saturday.

Uppies have to get the ball to Workington Hall and Downies to Workington Harbour to win.

While some written lists and documents do exist, they’re hard to quickly track down and access, which often leaves people with questions about hailers from days past.

For the first time, we’ve decided to put together the list online and make it accessible for you and for future generations.

We’ve listed every hailer we could track down using old lists, archives, stories from stalwart players and more.

Our thanks go to author Keith Wallace, who graciously allowed us to use the information he collated for his excellent books The Barbarians of Workington. Without him, this list would not be possible.

The list is not complete – not every hailer was mentioned in contemporary reports, names were spelt wrong and some people on the list have hailed more than they were credited for.

Some hailers are mentioned only by surname in old reports and some records are patchy – like Fred Leathers, who is recorded as hailing the ball twice as an Uppie in 1950 and 1958 but as a Downie in 1956.

In 1964 Alan Walker, bottom right, hailed the ball on Good Friday for the Downies aged only 14 – thought to be the youngest hailer in the game’s modern history. Thanks to Marie Walker for the photograph

We’re also missing a raft of hailers from the 2000s – are you one of them? Is one of your family members?

Or did one of your ancestors hail a ball? Records for Uppies and Downies are believed to have begun in 1775 but most are lost to the mists of time – unless they are in someone’s attic.

By the mid-1860s, Easter Tuesday was considered the most contended game played by men – only boys played on Good Friday and Easter Saturday. So at that time, it was only the winner of the Easter Tuesday game who was most often recorded as the winner.

In 1885, Saturday and Friday matches creep in with older players and the change begins to three games starting to be played by everyone.

If you think we’ve missed a hailer, please get in touch. We’re counting on people like you to help us fill in the blanks!

We’d also love to see your photos too  â€“ we’ll publish a selection of them as we get ready for Uppies & Downies 2025.
