A Lake District hotel’s plan to introduce advertising boards for its business has been thrown out by planners because they would be too intrusive.
English Lakes Hotels Ltd wanted to erect the advertising at three sites at its Low Wood Bay Resort and Spa, Windermere on the A591.
It said it had become increasingly clear that a co-ordinated on-the-ground advertising strategy was needed for it and access to the marina and Water Sports Centre.
It said the scheme would have formalised advertisement locations on the site, replacing the current ad hoc approach to on site advertisements, with banners and
flags erected in a number of locations with details of events and visitor experiences taking place.

The first sign, to the north of the hotel’s entrance, would have been 5ft 2in tall and the firm said it would give it the opportunity to advertise events and activities.
A 5ft 6in sign installed at the hotel would have been placed on a timber screen in front of existing equipment.

Several signs were mooted for the marina and water sports centre, including three banners on poles to the south of the area and three to the north.

The firm said: “One of the key aims of the advertisements adjacent to access to the water sports centre is to increase the visibility of the access, giving visitors a clear indication of the access location when approaching the site.
!As such, these advertisements, particularly the banner poles, aim to improve public safety.”

But the Lake District National Park Authority said the proposed signs north of the hotel access would be harmful to the surrounding area due to their location, size, illumination and prominence.
It said a bid for 10 signs at the watersports and marina access would be highly visible from the A591
It added: “These 10 signs would add an unacceptable level of clutter to this location on the lakeshore and they would be harmful to the setting of the adjacent listed building due to their location, number, size and illumination, to the detriment of public amenity.”
