Uppies & Downies 2025: Hard-fought battle sees Uppies take this year’s crown

Stefan Scott is the latest Uppie to grace Cumbria Crack’s Hailers Hall of Fame.

He managed to hail the ball at Workington Hall after a tough three-and-a-half hour game in the town that mainly took place in the car park of the Travelodge.

There were a few casualties of the traditional no-rules football game – vehicles in the car park came a cropper due to the crush of bodies in a scrum that didn’t dip in energy all night.

It was the second game of the Uppies & Downies in 2025 and Uppies scooping this win means they have won the series. Downies will be playing for their pride in the next game on Saturday.

Stefan was given £500 by Speed Competitions for his win – and said he would donate it to charity.

Uppie Shane Roe hailed the ball on Good Friday after a drawn-out game in wet conditions, that at one point saw players in the town’s cricket club ground.

Here’s our photos from the Good Friday game.

Here’s our hailers hall of fame too – every hailer we could find from the 1800s to the present day.

And if you want to find out more about the game, here’s a whistlestop tour through its history.

Here’s how the game unfolded on Easter Tuesday – and we’ll be here on Saturday, bringing you all the action as it happens too!
