A McLaren 720 has been seized by police and its driver arrested after it was spotted speeding on a Lake District road.

Cumbria police’s roads policing unit said the sports car was spotted on the A591, which runs between Windermere and Keswick, at 120mph.

The driver initially failed to stop for police officers but when he was pulled over, they found that he had no insurance, a provisional licence and a previous warning about careless or dangerous driving.

The unit, in a social media post, said: “Bringing your McLaren 720 to Cumbria? Out with your girlfriend? Don’t put yourself, passengers and other road users at risk.

“The driver was arrested and charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop, no insurance and incorrect licence.”

The vehicle was also seized.

The driver was arrested as part of a police campaign to crack down on factors which can cause collisions.

Operation Spotlight is a month-long campaign to highlight the Fatal Four – the most dangerous behaviours on the road. They are speeding, using a mobile phone at the wheel, not wearing a seatbelt and driving under the influence of drink and/or drugs.
