A man has pleaded not guilty to causing a pensioner’s death by careless dariving following a tragic A66 collision near Keswick.

Thomas Hurst, 84, known as Norman, died after a two-vehicle collision near Thornthwaite.

The incident was reported to Cumbria police at 9.05am on Friday, March 1 last year. It involved a Citroen Picasso driven by Mr Hurst, who was from the Silloth area, and a white Vauxhall Combo van.

Following his death, Mr Hurst’s family said he was “a fiercely loyal man, who would do anything for those closest to him”.

At Carlisle Crown Court this afternoon, Carl Davidson, 40, of Pennine Way in the city, appeared in front of a judge.

During a short hearing he pleaded not guilty to causing Mr Hurst’s death, by driving a Vauxhall Combo van carelessly on the A66 on March 1 2024.

Davidson will next stand trial in front of a jury at the crown court. A start date of February 9 2026, has previously been set by a judge.

In the meantime Davidson remains on conditional bail.
