Two former Workington riders were among the points for Berwick at Scunthorpe last night, although the Bandits lost 50-40.
A third ex-Comet also top-scored for the Scorpions who overcame the loss of No.1 Steve Worrall to run up the Championship win at the Eddie Wright Raceway.
Worrall was involved in a heavy Heat 1 pile-up with Bandits ex-Comet Peter Kildemand and was unable to continue, but his team-mates covered well with injury rider replacement.
They moved 14 points up after Heat 9 before the visitors reduced the gap in the closing stages, largely thanks to a 5-1 from Kildemand and last season’s Workington captain Craig Cook in Heat 13.
The other former Workington rider, Scorpions reserve Simon Lambert enjoyed his best night of the season with 13 points and Connor Mountain scored 10, while Cook (12+1), Drew Kemp (11) and Kildemand (10) dominated the Bandits’ scoring.
Berwick boss Stewart Dickson said: “Overall I would have to say it was a decent effort against a side with a dominant home record, but by the same token three riders not beating an opponent was poor.”
The scheduled return fixture at Shielfield Park today has been postponed due to a poor weather forecast.
That was also the call on Workington’s scheduled Championship opener against champions Poole at Northside.
